Program Description and History

Greentimes is a "By Kids, For Kids" science and environmental writing education program. After school, high school students gather to create environmental and science newsletters (Greentimes and Greentimes JR) for their younger peers. These newsletters are curriculum-based to support science, language arts, and environmental classroom lessons. Greentimes Teacher Guides, created by staff, accompany each newsletter.

Covering topics such as habitats, plants, animals, the solar system, forces of nature and weather, free Greentimes materials reach the hands of over 30,000 children and 950 teachers in under-resourced public schools in Massachusetts.

For more information about how you can order materials, become a teen writer, or help out, check out the Get Involved section of our website, or contact us directly by calling 617-552-8504 or emailing greentimes@urbaneco.org.

After School Program

History

Greentimes began under the umbrella of Global Habitat Project in Cambridge, MA in 1991. The "By Kids, For Kids" materials were so popular with teachers that it quickly grew up into a full-fledged after school program in downtown Boston. In the spring of 2006, Global Habitat Project merged with Urban Ecology Institute – another Boston area science and environmental education non-profit. Within Urban Ecology Institute, Greentimes has the opportunity to take its after school programming and education materials to a whole new level.
