Carl Lowenberg
Education Program Assistant, AmeriCorps*VISTA
Carl grew up in Iowa, California, Vermont, and Massachusetts, where he learned to grow sweet-corn, ride a bicycle, tap maple syrup, and climb trees, respectively. Now he’s excitedly attempting to adapt these outdoor interests to life in the big city of Boston. Carl graduated from Wesleyan University in 2006 with a degree in International Government, focusing on sustainable development in Latin America. He spent a year studying in Chile and Brazil and had the chance to visit deserts, rainforests, and other South American natural wonders. At school, Carl helped create the student-run Long Lane Farm, which raised organic vegetables and awareness about environment-friendly farming practices. For the first year after college he lived in a cabin in the Massachusetts woods and taught Middle School students at an outdoor education program. He’s looking forward to a great year with the Urban Ecology Institute’s education programs.

Gene Gorman
Program Volunteer, Writing Coach
Gene is a third-year PhD student in the English Department at Boston College where he focuses his research and teaching on 20th century and contemporary American literature and culture, creative nonfiction, and composition. He holds an MA from St. Louis University, where he focused on rhetoric and composition, and an AB from Duke. Before graduate school, Gene spent seven years as a journalist with newspapers, magazines, and Web sites in North Carolina, Alabama, and St. Louis. He lives in the Columbia/Savin Hill neighborhood in Dorchester with his wife, Terri, and their very busy 2 year old, Declan. After he helps put this year’s final edition of Greentimes to bed, Gene will turn his attention to making ballplayers—and good city-zens—out of the “Dot Rats” who make up the Savin Hill “Major B” Astros.

Brie Jaquette
Program Volunteer
Bri is a first year Masters student in the English Department at Boston College. She also holds a Bachelors degree in English from Denison University. Her scholarly interests include American literature, women's writing and feminism. Before moving to Boston in August, she spent a year as an AmeriCorp*VISTA in Columbus, Ohio where she volunteered with an organization dedicated to fighting children's hunger. She is excited to return to volunteering through UEI.
